Earth Day Cupcake Wars
For this project we had to create a cupcake stand with a theme of something relevant to Earth Day. Our project is about preserving and protecting our oceans and coral reefs. It is predicted that in 30 years nearly 60% of the coral reefs of the world will be gone. This is a frightening statistic. We ad a whole need to help preserve this fragile and amazing ecosystem. Around here we do not think about our impact on coral reefs or the ocean because of how far inland we live. One carbon emissions are a huge problem. The CO2 from our cars and factories go up into the atmosphere. Our world then naturally breaks it down in which 1/3 of it is dissolved into the ocean. and because we emit so much the acidity of our oceans slowly rises. This means death to the pH sensitive coral reefs of the world. This is the problem our group is trying to confront along with things like over fishing, trash going into our oceans, and the mining or coral for gift shops and architecture
Our group wanted to try to truly portray a coral reef so we used a wide variety of materials with different textures, shapes, and colors. We used sponges, cardboard, corks, paint, sand, shells, fake plants, wood and more! All of our materials were recycled or reused to go along with our earth day theme. The use of all of these materials give our stand a realistic feel. Although our stand had many diffrent colors, textures, and items on it, it did not really pop. This is where our cupcake design came into play, we used complementary colors of blue, for the icing, and orange for the fish. This emphasises the cupcakes and adds color to our reef. All of these elements together create a 3-D peice of art the has a sense of completion and unity.
